CFCC launches machining technology course

WILMINGTON — Registration is now open for Cape Fear Community College’s new machine technology course designed to make the path to becoming a machinist more accessible.

Computer Integrated Machining Technology aims to meet the needs of students seeking a career in this high-demand field, with night course offerings as well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 47,500 machinist job openings are projected annually over a decade.

The course introduces machining operations related to the metalworking industry and the concepts and capabilities of computer numerical control machine tools. Topics include machine shop safety, measuring tools, lathes, drilling machines, saws, milling machines, bench grinders, and layout instruments. Emphasis is placed on the setup and operation of machine tools, including the selection and use of work-holding devices, speeds, feeds, cutting tools, and coolants.

“We are excited to introduce the Machining Technology course,” CFCC President Jim Morton said in a press release. “By offering both day and evening courses, we provide aspiring machinists with greater flexibility to pursue their education and achieve their career goals.”

Cape Fear Manufacturing Partnership, GE Hitachi, MA Group, Rulmeca Corporation, and Wilmington Grill have partnered with CFCC on this course.

“The Computer Integrated Machining Technology program is critical to our manufacturing base in southeastern North Carolina,” James Flock, Chairman of the Cape Fear Manufacturing Partnership, said in a press release. “This training provides manufacturers in our region with a well-trained talent pipeline ready to contribute value to their employers while providing students with a path toward the rich and rewarding careers available to them across the multitude of manufacturing industries in the area.”

Registration is now open for this entry-level course. The course begins on August 18, 2023, for both day and evening offerings. For more information on the course, visit cfcc.edu/computer-integrated-machining.
